Context
This is daily conversation between Deny and Azmy on
Wednesday 6th 2012 in west auditorium Mohammad Djazman at 13.00 when
atmosphere is quite. They are talking about Hobby. The speaker’s condition is
hungry but still happy.

Data of Conversation

Deny :
Hi Azmy…why do you collect many STAMPS?
2.
Azmy :
Ohh… Hi Deny… I am collecting the stamps for my collection.

Deny :
What do you MEAN?
4.
Azmy :
Yes, actually my hobby is collecting stamps.

Deny :
Why do you like collecting STAMPS?
6.
Azmy :
Because I like to see the unique pictures of the stamps. How about YOU, What is your HOBBY?

Deny :
Hmm::: I think(0,3) I don’t have hobby. Should we have a HOBBY?

Azmy :
Not really...But in our lives we must have something we like most which is called HOBBY.

Deny :
So, hobby is a pleasure. Then, I think I have a hobby now.
10. Azmy : Of course, so
what is your Hobby?
11. Deny : Umm:::I like
to read comics, especially detective Conan.
12. Azmy : That is your
HOBBY, Reading comic.
13. Deny : Ohh…..I see,
thank you.
14. Azmy : you’re welcome,
but, do you have all of detective Conan’s collection?
15. Deny : Yes, I do. I even (0,3) go to the black market
because the original comics have not yet been published. How about you’re COLLECTION?
16. Azmy : So far I have collected stamps from
some countries but I still should
find other stamps.
17. Deny : Do you need much money for
your HOBBY?
18. Azmy : Yes of course I need much money
because I order the stamps so it
costs little bit expensive.
19. Deny : WOW… your hobby is expensive
20. Azmy : Yeah…but I like to do it.
21. Deny : okay… Good
luck with your hobby azmy.

C. Conversation Analysis
1.
The
characters of the speakers
From our conversation
it can be inferred that Deny and Azmy are attentive persons each other. Our
conversation was adequate fluent but there are certain parts hesitate in
answering. Azmy is also a type of tolerant person (In the conversation number 7
and number 15),because she is patient to wait (three second) for the intended
speaker (Deny). Deny having characters that are too enthusiastic in talk (in
the conversation number 1, 3, 5, 7, 15, 17 and 19) and Azmy has a relaxed but firm
character (in the conversation number 6, 8, 12, 14, 16, and 18)

tone
The
stressing tones of this conversation are “STAMPS”, “MEAN”, “HOBBY”, “COLLECTION”,
and “WOW”. This stressing tone aims to emphasize utterance in important topics

Pauses
The pauses of
this conversation are “I think (0,3)” in number 7, the speaker (Deny) needs two
seconds to think before uttering “I think I don’t have hobby”. And “I even (0,3)”
in number 15, the speaker (Deny) needs two seconds to think before uttering “I
even go to the black market”. It is can be inferred that deny is a type of
passive person because she need any time (0,3) to think before choice her
utterance to answer the question.

Backchannel
Backchannels are
vocal indications of attention. In our conversation the backchannels there are

Ohh (in number 2), it is to responds the
greetings from Deny.

Hmm (in number 7), it is showing
hesitation before choice her utterance to answer the question.

Umm (in number 11), it is showing
hesitation when she will continue her utterances
·
Ohh (in number 13), ) in beginning
utterance, it is not showing hesitation but it does show
a sense of pride that she apparently had a hobby

Wow (in number 19), ) it
is expression of surprise when she hear that Azmy’s hobby need a lot of money
·
Yeah (number 20) it
is to responds the utterances of Deny.
d. High
considerateness style
The participation of each speakers
include high considerateness style because our conversation non-interrupting, non-imposing way of taking
part in conversation. The speakers of this conversation are tolerant each
other.
e. Adjacency
pairs
Adjacency pairs are a sequence of two utterances by different speakers
in conversation. The second speaker is a response to the first speaker.

In every conversation there are closing
as a sign to end the conversation. In our conversation the closing are “good
luck” and “thank you”. Closing in conversation is very important because it is
show that the speakers have found the clarity of the conversation.
